Thermostat

After I learned you
would keep the apartment
I sat so still on the steps
behind my sister's
building that the motion-
triggered floodlights
turned off.
                  Turned out
I couldn't leave after
all — they kept
my car at the shop
for the weekend.

Couldn't figure out why
the engine overheated
when it idled.
